Aldebaran, The Follower

Royal Star of the Vernal Equinox

mekabre royal star spring equinox

The four Royal stars, Aldebaran, Regulus, Antares, Fomalhaut, are the brightest stars in their constellations, appearing to stand out from the other stars in the sky and among the 25–brightest stars in the night sky having a magnitude of 1.5 or brighter. The Persians considered these four stars to be the four guardians of the heavens. They marked the seasonal changes and marked the equinoxes and solstices. Aldebaran, whose Persian name is Tascheter is the watcher of the East, and is the Royal Star which marks the vernal Equinox.

A pale beauty and the “Follower” of the Pleiades and the dominant star in the Taurus constellation. The Taurus constellation, containing notable stars and clusters include the Hyades and Pleiades, fixed the Spring Equinox from approximately 4,000 to 2,000 B.C. During the Age of Taurus, a central form or ritual activity were the cults of the bull. The Apis bull of ancient Egypt was an actual creature chosen to serve as the earthly vessel of the spirit of Osiris.

Aldebaron marks the red eye of the bull and is probably linked with the term, “hitting the bull’s eye”, and was equated with the Persian god of light, Ahura Mazda, and is said to endow integrity and to engender the test of honor. Aldebaron marked the Vedic lunar mansion which, as Na’ir al Dabaran, the BrightOne of the Follower. In astrology, Aldebaron has been thought to be eminently fortunate, foreshadowing future riches and honor. Try the following ritual to invoke riches and honor!

Ritual

Needed:

Loa voodoo doll
3 white candles
Incense of Jasmine or Rose
Dark Chocolate

Take a cleansing bath, imagine yourself in the ocean, the womb of all creation. After your cleansing bath, light the incense, and three white candles.

Stand facing the east, the place of the rising sun, saying this

“Welcome element of air, fountain of insight and inspiration.

Let the creatures of the air surround me with clarity of dreams.”

Imagine yourself in a field of green wheat, the wind making waves through the standing stalks. Smell the air and notice the freshness of spring. You might feel a physical gust of wind, or see the candles flicker as the element of Air surrounds you.

You may have a vision of a presence that comes to share in your experience, consider this your totem. Set your Loa Voodoo Doll beside you, to represent this totem, as you reach out to touch her. Feel the companionship. Sit in a spot facing the East and meditate accessing your dreams. Remember things you truly crave and the creativity you have lost or the love you need.

Say a few words of gratitude to the elements and send them back to where they came with love. Thank your Loa Voodoo doll and let out three breaths of gratitude and ground yourself. Set a few pieces of dark chocolate next to your Loa Voodoo Doll as an offering. Blow out all your candles before leaving the room. Blessed Be your journey into the green, fertile ground of your aspirations. So it has been written, so mote it be.

Spend the Winter Solstice with a Royal Star

Aquariusblue

The four Royal Stars are one of the twenty-five brightest stars in our skies. It is believed that each one rules over one quarter of the night sky, and was held that within each one there is good power and evil power.

Their names are Aldebaran, Regulus, Antares, and Fomalhaut. Each one is synonymous with the changing of the Seasons. This Winter Solstice, on December 21, we look to Fomalhaut – the watcher of the North – who rules over the Winter Solstice and stands alone in Pisces.

This star’s name literally translates to ‘Mouth of Fish’ and is the solitary brightest star in the region and is often depicted in the Pisces constellation as the fish drinking up the waters of Aquarius pitcher.

Full Moon Energy

Crystal-supermoon

During the Sagittarius Full Moon of December 3 and 4, the moon is reflecting the light of the Sun in Gemini and it is the last Supermoon of 2017.

The full moon in general symbolizes a polarity between masculine and feminine forces. As these two forces oppose each other, you can expect inner tension from outer sources which can lead to conflicts and/or crises that drain your energy.

But you are in luck! With this December Supermoon, in the fiery sign of Sagittarius, it will advocate freedom, leadership, and adventure!

And with the Sun in Gemini, it shouts communication. So you may contemplate how you communicate with others. There is power in the spoken word. Words carry great weight for those to whom we say them. However, the words alone are not what make them powerful. It is your intention, your tone, your inflection, and your desired outcome of speaking those words that give words their greatest power.

This full moon will be a great time to take a deep look inward to check if your thoughts nourish & nurture or if they are hurtful & harmful or angry.

The best advice at this time is to stay under the radar. Maintain your integrity in all social and business endeavors and counter the deceptive influences of this full moon.

The full moon is the perfect opportunity to acknowledge and release pinned up emotions. Use this ritual to recharge yourself.

Moon Bathing and Crystal Charging Ritual

You will need:
– Mekabre Loa Voodoo Doll
– Smudge Stick
– Crystals and Gemstones
– White Candle

Smudge yourself and environment to clear away any negativity to allow the healing energy of the full moon to work its magic.

Surround yourself with your crystals and gemstones. Light the candle and hold your Mekabre Loa Voodoo Doll close to your heart. Visualize the moon bathing you and the Mekabre Loa Voodoo Doll in a protective circle of light – filling your space with pure white energy.

Stand facing the moon with your arms above your head and palms facing the moon. Feel the power of the power of the moon penetrate your being. Draw your hands to your heart. Ground yourself.

When you are ready, bring your hands to your sides, palms facing the earth. Visualize that you are sending your energy deep into the earth. See this energy take shape as a massive root system and feel yourself become more grounded and one with Mother Earth. Then feel yourself slowly coming back into your body. Relax in this peace until you are ready to return to your normal routine, fully charged and grounded.

Remember that with the Sun and full moon, you are tuned in to the forces of Sagittarius and Gemini. These signs are devoted to knowledge, truth, understanding, and communication. If they are out of balance, they bring righteousness, gossip, judgment, confusion, and lies. So be sure to keep yourself grounded this month and repeat the ritual if necessary.

There’s something extra special about this Supermoon, it seems to fully open our hearts and our minds to be relaxed and more accepting of others. Maybe it’s just the general aura of awe and wonder at the beauty of the moon or the holiday season.

Icelandic Sagas and the Fur Trade

icelandiclit

Icelandic Sagas recount the struggles and the conflict of family history. Conflicts over wealth, power and prestige which took place in the 9th or 10th centuries and the resulting accounts were later recorded in the 13th or 14th centuries.

Literature created a social differentiation between classes, and was later used to maintain or reconnect links with well known kings and heroes in Nordic countries to trace their origins. Nordic tales emphasized ethnic characteristics conducive to literary culture, an activity which was not banned by the continental kings of Europe. This helped pass the time during the long winters and cattle farming provided the necessary parchment materials.

They wrote of pillaging and plunder, of which the tribute and conquest accumulated wealth and a vast store of goods to trade. They traded furs of badger, bear, boar ermine, fox, hare, lynx, sable and wolf. Skins, bones, fleece and feathers of falcons, walrus, duck, otter, whalebone, ivory and amber as well as honey, tin and wheat. These goods in particular, the wool and fur from these animals were made into clothing, bedding, sword scabbards (sheep fleece). They were used in blankets, capes, hoods, gloves, scabbards and grave offerings. Basic hats made from felted animal fiber’s or plaited plant fibers. Some leathers found were cat skins which were used in burial, boar bristles were found on brushes, beaver testicles were used for medicinal purposes. They traded beaver fur to fashion as trim on king’s cloaks and fur headdresses for the rich. Fur trimmed cloaks of fox, hare, bear, otter and goats.

Clothing is still fashioned from these early beginnings. The Icelandic people were self-sufficient and traded in Scandanavian centers.  Wool appeared to be the most important trade good to them. From sheep, they gained wool, meat and dairy. All aspects of fibre processing including spinning, weaving, cutting and sewing was performed mostly with wool or linen. Wool came from sheep, while linen came from flax called Linum. Knitting was not known in the Viking lands and articles were constructed using a technique called ‘nalbinding’  which is creating fabric by knotting woolen yarn together. Brightly colored clothing was a symbol of wealth and power due to the expense of multiple fabric dyeing operations.

A narrative which describes the history of Icelandic peoples also gives insight to the beginning of fiber art. The tales which described in detail what people wore to events and to war had a purpose. The Icelandic Sagas often told of great warriors and the clothing that those warriors wore. Clothing that made the man was created by the women !

Porthole

Porthole by Nicole Cote

To boldly go where no one has gone before-

I have a fascination with space and the celestial – planets, stars, lunar bodies, (Star Trek.. cough).

This painting is an original acrylic painting of a reddish/purple planet on a celestial background, framed with white.

Measures 9 inches by 12 inches.

The planet is detailed by outlining the random curls and tendrils of the ink as it is applied to paper. An art teacher told me that you can’t fight the ink- It has a mind of it’s own. In my art, I choose to celebrate this and to accentuate the beauty of the ink with outlining.

Ingredients: India Ink, High-flow acrylics, gesso (as paint), acrylic paint, ballpoint pen

The Magic of Hallowe’en

Jack-o-Lantern_2003-10-31These days, Halloween is filled with costumes, parties, candy, and adorable ‘trick or treaters’ going door to door – making great fun for kids and adults alike!

The roots of Halloween or All Hallows Eve date back to the ancient Celtic festival of Samhaim (pronounced sow-in) which roughly translates to Summer’s End. The end of summer meant harvesting and moving livestock in preparation for Winter. It was the most popular and significant holiday in the Celtic calendar,

In 601A.D., Pope Gregory I incorporated this festival into the Christian holidays, commemorating All Hallows Eve (Eve of Saints) together with the Christian, All Saints Day.

This pagan holiday was created to honor the dead – some visiting cemeteries and creating altars offering food and drink to the spirits of the past. Bonfires were lit to honor the dead and to help light their paths on the other side.

HALLOWEEN RITUAL

To begin this ritual, prepare a meal and serve a portion of it in several dishes on an altar decorated with candles, photos and personal items of past family members. Also be sure to decorate your altar with items like pumpkins, squash, root vegetables, nuts, dark breads, dried leaves and acorns – or create a cornucopia filled with an abundance of fruit and veggies.

Next, you will need:

• Mekabre Loa Voodoo Doll
• Mulled cider, wine, or mead
• Freshly baked bread
• Feast

Place your Mekabre Loa Voodoo Doll on your altar. Give the doll offerings of food and drink while remembering your deceased loved one. Then sit down to your own meal and begin by the breaking of the bread. Raise your glass of wine and say out loud:

Tonight we toast Samhain (sow-in)
To the abundant harvest and summer’s end.
To the food that lies before us,
We thank you Mother Earth for all you have given.
We look forward to the coming seasons.
We know cold nights and sacred darkness await us before your return.

Then drink from your glass of wine. After you have enjoyed your meal, take glass of cider/wine/mead and approach your altar. Sprinkle several drops of wine onto the altar in honor of your past loved ones.

Prepare a bonfire outside your home or in a fireplace and light it. Enjoy its warmth while reflecting fondly on your family and friends.

Keep the Mekabre Loa Voodoo Doll in a place of honor and in sight to remind you of your appreciation. Practice gratitude daily and be thankful for all your good fortune.

Take Hold & Harness The Powerful Thunder Moon

July thunder moon

mekabre.com
Welcome major change during this Saturday night’s full moon in Capricorn! Empowered by Pluto, it will be a potent full moon with potentially charged energy. This can be transformational by creating surprising new openness. This could also precipitate a turning point, so be expecting something profound – be ready to welcome major change into your life.

This moon takes its name from the large thunderhead clouds that form on the open plains. July marks the start of our journey back toward the colder months, so pause a moment in the warmth of the sun or rest in the shade – all while stoking that inner fire that burns brightly in us all.

This month is full of sunshine… so work with the energy that the sun brings. Focus on strengthening your organization skills, nurturing your inner power, building your energy and find your happiness.

Perform a gratitude ritual as a way of expressing your own thankfulness.

During these long days and nights of summer, pay homage to the goddess Belisama – goddess of lakes and rivers, fire, crafts and light. Her name translates as “bright summer.”

Know that by being able to leave the past behind that this allows ourselves to be ready to accept our future abundance.

Belisama Ritual

Items Needed:
– Green Candle
– Loa Voodoo Doll
– Frankincense Oil
– Small Blue Apatite Crystal or Purple Quartz

Gather ingredients together on the eve of the full moon. Take a moment to reflect on the physical and emotional abundance in your life. As you are thinking about these things, anoint the candle with the Frankincense Oil and then light it. Place your Loa Voodoo Doll between you and the candle. Gently place the crystal over the doll’s heart.

As the candle burns, visualize all negative & detrimental experiences being burned up in the candle’s flame.

Next, bring to mind what you are the most grateful for in your life.

Stare at the candle’s flame and concentrate on your grateful thoughts and bring them to the forefront of your mind. Know that the goddess Belisama is present that she brings purification, strength, and support in difficult times. She also brings the notion of abundance.

After a few minutes meditating, blow out the candle and place the crystal under your pillow for three nights. This will help pull out bad memories from your conscious and unconscious mind and replace them with love and light. After the third day, bury the crystal outside in the soil or drop into a jar of sea salt to clear the negative energy. Give it a few days to release.

Remember to recognize that gratitude is a gift – one that is able to continue to give…. and counting one’s blessings is just as important because it proves to us how truly fortunate we really are.

The Ancient Power Of Voodoo

from Boredpanda.com

Mekabre Voodoo Dolls

The word Me‘käbre was originally used in medieval France to renounce one’s religion and the manner in which the dead should be properly commemorated. In English, it referenced the “dance of death” and then gradually was used more broadly to describe anything grim or gruesome.

Mekabre LLC is anything but grim or gruesome – we take a whimsical, light-hearted approach to our branding based on the real-life, deeply rooted, spiritual tradition of Voodoo.

Voodoo is a fusion of magical religious practices from Africa and Christianity that takes on different characteristics and emphases when practiced in various locations.

Based on these ancient practices, the Mekabre Loa Voodoo Doll was created and designed by Kody Simmons and Toby Cote.

Loa is the cornerstone of the Voodoo religion. It is the “spirit” of Voodoo that aids the practitioner in certain aspects of life, such as success, sexuality, spirituality, health and even the afterlife. Each Loa has its own unique characteristics, likes, dislikes and special powers. They are often referred to as ‘good’ gods and could even be viewed as types of angels or guardians, as they seem to instill certain wisdom and truths in their human followers or callers when summoned.

Working across great physical distances, Kody and Toby collaborated on branding ideas and successfully created the Mekabre Loa Voodoo Doll prototype.

Kody researched the history of the voodoo religion to help create the Mekabre Loa Voodoo Doll, logo and graphics used on the coffin box packaging and spell cards.

Toby spent many hours researching the various voodoo spirits, rituals and spells to help create the foundation for the Mekabre Spell Cards.

“We wanted to create a voodoo doll as a tool to help people create positive change. We are very proud of our brand and what we have created and are excited to share it with you.”

A Midsummer’s Eve .. Summer Solstice

by Mekabre.com

stonehenge-summer-solstice

As we enter into the astrological sign of Cancer, we celebrate Summer Solstice with its nurturing emotional connections. Flowers are in bloom and love is in the air. Unveil your love and enjoy the energy as the earth revolves around the sun. Celebrate the rituals and bask in the sunlight!

Solstice is derived from the latin words (sol) sun and sistere (to make stand ). As the sun in the summer sky appears to stand still in the sign of Cancer, the solstice boasts the longest day of daylight which can last up to 15 hours. Open your heart as it is a time to celebrate.

Cancer, the feminine energy is associated with mothering, nurturing and emotional connections. As a result of the sun beaming down on us, we feel more vibrant and alive, more vital. Bathe in it, to nourish your body and soul.

Wedding season and Gay Pride are celebrated in June, which is not coincidental, but very much on purpose. The coming together of love and energy and the sun makes the world go around. It is considered to be a holiday for lovers, as it coincides with nature’s blooming flowers. Powerful energy from the solstice is reflected in nature as flowers, plants and nature is blooming.

Cultures around the world have celebrated summer solstice as a major holiday, throughout history. People often tried to attract their lovers to them via charms and chants by casting spells to bring lovers to them.

According to Donna Hines, author of Celestially Auspicious Occasions: Seasons, Cycles and Celebrations, “In New Orleans about a century ago, the Voodoo Queen performed a snake-like dance called the Calinda dance to represent sexual, slithering energy. Everyone would partake in the celebration at the square — slaves, ex-slaves, Creoles, etc. — which was marked by frenzied drum beats, bonfires, swirling dances and imitation of sacred African serpent affects.

How will you attract love and happiness into your life?

Here is a ritual to try with your Loa doll by your side: place 3 drops of lemon oil on the heart of the Loa voodoo doll and recite the following wish spell.

Wish Spell

May the Goddess and God

of light and love,

grant me my wish

and quiet my heart.

I place my desire in your hands,

For you to do as you will

and as I deserve.

So mote it be.

Manifest love, inspiration or desires in your life, with the Mekabre Loa Voodoo Doll!
